The Winnipeg Humane Society is a registered charity dedicated to protecting animals from suffering and to promoting their welfare and dignity.
We are a non-profit, volunteer-based organization funded primarily by donations, memberships and bequests.
The humane movement in Winnipeg was formalized in 1894 with the founding of the “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women, Children and Animals.” By 1906 other agencies had been established to protect women and children, so the organization’s focus shifted to concentrate solely on animals.
The first WHS shelter to house animals was opened on Logan Avenue in 1929. In 1968 The Winnipeg Humane Society opened a new facility at 5 Kent Street where we were located until the opening of our new building at 45 Hurst Way in October 2007.

No other organization in our community does the work of the WHS– accepting all animals no matter their condition or circumstances. The very sick, the very old, those with acute behavioural problems and those for whom finding a Home is next to impossible. Unlike most other shelters, the WHS is Here for them all.
