The See Spot Read program has been supporting children in our community by providing them the opportunity to develop their reading skills by reading to dogs for well over a decade. Over the years, the demand for the program has increased drastically. Thanks to the generous support of two funding bodies, we are able to support 18 sessions and 108 students every year, FREE OF CHARGE!

The See Spot Read program allows students who may need support with their confidence when it comes to reading and provides a safe and non-judgemental space to read to our dog ambassadors. Through correction free reading and literacy-based activities, increased reading levels have been proven.

Due to the continued demand, we have a waiting list for schools wanting to participate and would like to try and cater to as many schools as possible. In order to do so, we need to be sure that we have enough dog ambassadors to help get the job done.

We are looking to recruit dog ambassadors to participate in our See Spot Read program. Dog ambassadors play an important role in the program, and provide students with a safe, non-judgemental environment to gain confidence in their reading ability.

Do you have a dog that you think would be perfect for the job? Apply today and you could have your dog ‘behaviour assessed’ to determine suitability for the program. Join us today by filling out your application form below:

Apply to volunteer with your dog for See Spot Read!

Not only is being a dog ambassador a rewarding position here with the Winnipeg Humane Society, but you also receive some really great incentives. Through the See Spot Read program, all dog ambassadors receive a branded WHS t-shirt, dog leash, dog harness, cinch bag, and a $100 honorarium for every full 10 sessions (absence free) you complete with your dog!

Our volunteers are extremely passionate about what they do, and we admire that. We are very grateful for each and every one of them.

In addition to the generous funding we have received for this program, our See Spot Read program is also thankful for the generosity of the Winnipeg Public Libraries for providing us with the space for two of our See Spot Read sessions, and to McNally Robinson Booksellers for providing us with books and goodie bags for our students. Without the support from our community, this program would not have seen the immense growth and continued demand it sees today. Thank you!

Still want to volunteer with the See Spot Read program but do not have a dog? No problem! We are always in need of more volunteers to help facilitate our SSR crafts/activities with the kids in our Classroom! Email our Education Department at [email protected] to find out more.

*PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19, we will be looking to facilitate volunteer interviews over the phone throughout the months of June, July and August. The See Spot Read season will begin October 2020.
