The Winnipeg Humane Society is reminding residents of the importance in responsibly rehoming animals they can no longer keep, especially when it comes to animals currently illegal within city limits. The reminder comes after a juvenile female piglet was found late last month, abandoned in a dog kennel at Kilcona dog park. The piglet was brought to Pembina Veterinary Hospital by concerned members of the public, before making its way to the Winnipeg Humane Society where attempts to locate an owner went unsuccessful.

Representatives from the Winnipeg Humane Society, Little Red Barn Micro-Sanctuary and Earthdog Terrier Rescue worked together to establish a rehoming plan for the unlikely shelter resident, which resulted in the piglet, now dubbed Mudpie, successfully finding a loving, forever home on acreage outside of city limits.

“We may never know how the piglet ended up in her situation, but since pigs are illegal to keep within city limits (in areas not zoned for agriculture), it serves as a great reminder that there are many alternatives to abandoning an animal” says Brittany Semeniuk, Animal Welfare Specialist with the Winnipeg Humane Society. “In recent years, a number of farm sanctuaries have been established across Manitoba, who are able to provide assistance to those rehoming farm animals, by either taking in unwanted animals, or assisting owners in finding a new, forever home.”
