Winnipeg Humane Society Statement Regarding the Charges Through Project Artemis
*The statement and links contain details that may be disturbing to readers.*
The Winnipeg Humane Society is deeply heartbroken and outraged by the findings of Project Artemis, which have led to serious charges of animal cruelty against two alleged perpetrators. This case is a stark reminder of the cruelty that still exists and the need to speak up for the most vulnerable among us.
Our organization was originally founded as the “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women, Children and Animals;” advocating for those without a voice. Today, we carry on this legacy not only for animals but also in support of the child victims in this case, standing with survivors of online child sexual abuse material, who are re-victimized every time their image or video is shared.
At the WHS, we remain committed to being a voice for animals through public education, community support programs, and strong advocacy for legislation that protects them. We are steadfast in our call for stricter regulations on the online sale and exchange of animals, where unchecked activity continues to place animals at risk. The internet must not be a lawless frontier where the vulnerable are treated as commodities.
We are grateful for our partnership with the Province of Manitoba, which helps us advance initiatives prioritizing the safety and welfare of all animals. Through this collaboration, we operate the Winnipeg Humane Society Animal Welfare Line. If you suspect an animal welfare concern is occurring within Winnipeg, please contact the welfare line at 204-982-2028.
