1001 Donations: Gracie’s Story

Gracie came to the WHS depressed and in very poor health. Her skin was saggy because she was severely underweight. You could count every vertebra down her back and see her hip and rib bones. She had demodex (tiny mites) causing skin infections, itchiness, odor, and hair loss.

Gracie also couldn’t see.

Gracie had “Double Cherry Eye” where the glands of her third eyelids were popped out blocking her vision. Because of this she had trouble walking around.

WHS Veterinarian Dr. Youngs performed three surgeries to fix Gracie’s eyes, but each failed. The repair wouldn’t hold and the glands would pop out again.

Specialists told Dr. Youngs that with three failed surgeries, there was a 0% chance of fixing Gracie’s eyes. But she didn’t give up on Gracie. She performed a fourth eye surgery, doing a much more extensive repair. Two weeks later, Gracie had a follow-up appointment and this time the surgery worked! Gracie made a full recovery and was adopted within five days.

Gracie’s surgeries and care cost over $5,000. She is just ONE example of over 8,000 animals we care for each year. Every animal’s need varies, and we do everything we can for each of them so they can live healthy and happy lives with their future forever families. We do not give up on any animal, but we would not be able to help animals like Gracie without your support.

Your donations gave Gracie the extensive surgeries and care she needed to beat the odds.

Our annual 1001 Donations Telethon, presented by Vickar Automotive Group, is THIS SATURDAY, March 23 and we need your help to raise $60,000 so we can keep saving the lives of helpless animals in our community. These funds are essential for the WHS to care for over 8,000 animals this year.

Please make a donation today and help us help them.  All donations up to $60,000 are being matched dollar-for-dollar by six generous donors. This means $60,000 will become an amazing $120,000!

Tune in on March 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as we broadcast live from the WHS on winnipeghumanesociety.ca to see your donation dollars at work. We will share stories of animals like Gracie, along with WHS volunteers and staff who work tirelessly to make sure every animal gets a second chance to live a happy and healthy life.

We couldn’t help animals like Gracie every day without you. Thank you so much for gift that will make a difference.
