FAQs

How much time will campers spend with animals throughout the week?

Animal interactions at the WHS day camp can come in many different forms. Some may include a presentation with an animal, visiting with the shelter cats, dogs, or critters, taking a dog for a walk with the counsellors, or visiting with one of our dog ambassadors. The length of the interactions depends on the animals’ wellbeing, potential increased level of stress or the number of animals available to us. Unfortunately, not all animals do well with human interaction, so we are unable to meet all animals in the shelter. If we are aware that appropriate animals are limited, we do our best to make sure we have at least one dog ambassador for the day! We know animals are the highlight of kid camps here at the WHS, but we must always be aware of the animal’s wellbeing as well as the camper’s safety.

My booking confirmation says that I am the one attending camp, do you have my camper’s information?

Yes, we have all the information on your camper that you would have put into the booking system. The booking confirmation has your name as you are the one that made the account.

When will I receive more information on kid camp?

Parents/guardians will receive a parent handbook the Wednesday before camp starts. We don’t want to send it too early in case it was to get lost in all your other emails!

What does a typical day in the life of camp look like for my camper?

Drop off – 8:00am
Camp programming (ice breakers and basic camp rules) – 9:00am
Each day, campers will get to do 2 crafts, 1 hour of animal interaction, and play outside. They will also be participating in educational activities to learn more about the Winnipeg Humane Society and responsible pet care. Once throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to watch a spay or neuter surgery and every Friday there will be tie dye and water games.
Pick up – 4:00 – 5:00pm

Where do I drop off/pick up my camper and are there any special procedures?

Drop off is between 8:00am and 9:00am in the Joyce Gauthier Training Center at the back of our building. You can follow the large signs and the concrete path to the door.
Pick up is in the same place between 4:00pm and 5:00pm.
Our procedures for drop off and pick up are as follows:

– We require a guardian to sign their camper in and out each day. We do not allow campers to arrive or leave on their own.
– During pick up, we require the guardian to have identification and only those names provided with permission to pick up will be allowed to sign the camper out.
– There is an additional charge of $20.00 for every 15 minutes for late pick up of campers after 5:00pm.
