The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) is excited to announce the appointment of Krista Boryskavich as the organization’s animal advocacy lawyer, a first-of-its-kind position for an animal welfare agency in Manitoba.

The addition of an in-house animal advocacy lawyer further strengthens the WHS’ vision and mission by executing initiatives that bolster legal and legislative protection for all animals in the province.

“This position will be a driving force in helping us improve the welfare of farmed, wild, and companion animals throughout Manitoba. From working to make legislative changes to flagging opportunities to strengthen the voice of animals being used for entertainment purposes, this position will remain wide in scope,” says Jessica Miller, CEO of WHS.

Boryskavich pairs her passion for animal welfare with more than 20 years of experience in private legal practice, and municipal and provincial government. During her time as City Solicitor and Director of Legal Services for The City of Winnipeg, she advised City administrators, Council, and its committees on a wide range of issues.

“Krista will provide much-needed in-house legal advice to the WHS staff and board. More importantly, she will be able to guide us in our animal welfare work by ensuring animal welfare legislation is being enforced and advising on legal action, when necessary,” says Howard Almdal, board chair for WHS. “This is an exciting new phase in the history of the Winnipeg Humane Society and great news for animals in Manitoba.”
